The enigma of snake island

Some time ago, my first post in March 2016 to be exact, I posted about a field trip I took with my Dad, Rob, to Snake Island. What I didn't say at the time was that the reason we were there was some research Dad was doing into the area for a book he was going to write.

Well today is the day and he took delivery of the final printed book at lunchtime. The book is the story of the Northern shore of Corio bay. It covers the waters, coastline and lands from Limeburner's bay to Point Wilson from Colonial settlement until present day. The area has a rich history and is one that hasn't been told to this extent and depth before.

It also covers the first squatters and the failed attempt of the Port Phillip Association to "acquire" the land, wealthy and notable Geelong district families including Austin, Bates, Fyans, Kiddle and Walsh. It details how and why the various quarries, piers and shipping markers came to be, as well as looking in depth at the former Cheetham saltworks and the current day aquaculture activities. And of course Dad tells the story of how Snake island came to be the piece of land that it is today.

Congratulations Dad, it's a great achievement and one that we're all proud of you for!

In the coming weeks I'll post a few of the excerpts that I think will be of interest to the readers of this blog.

As always, have fun out there!
